#obsic recently spent 30 days aboard the @rvsallyride recovering 49 OBSs off the Galápagos Islands as part of the Marine IGUANA experiment (Lead PI @emiliehooft U Oregon). The instruments were deployed in April 2023.

This NSF funded project focuses on seismically imaging the mantle plume that has created the Galápagos Islands. More specifically the project intends to determine the thickness of the plume, the lateral distribution of the plume, and verify the presence of small-scale convection.

#obsic fabricated a #cataraft to be able to deploy #seismographs in Skilak Lake, Alaska. Normal operations require a large ship and a crane to deploy the instruments but that was not possible on the lake. Learn more about this project with #usgs - 🔗 in bio.

#obsic partnered with #usgs to deploy #seismographs in and around Skilak Lake, Alaska. This project looks to quantify ground acceleration from local and regional earthquakes in an effort to quantify how susceptible lake-bottom sediments are to shaking.

#obsic personnel along with #usgs (Nathan Miller and team, which included USGS divers), successfully completed a test deployment of our new fleet of 10 Sercel MicrOBS near the Weepecket Islands offshore #whoi earlier this month. These highly portable OBS are equipped with rechargeable batteries, and will enable OBSIC to rapidly deploy instrumentation in response to earthquake and volcanic hazards.

In collaboration with KUM @geomarkiel, OBSIC deployed and recovered #geomar Lobster OBSs capable of reaching depths of >7800 meters which were necessary for Chief Scientist Pablo Canales’ (#whoi) experiment in the Puerto Rico Trench.

Recently we spent two days tank testing our newest #nsffunded broadband instrument, Manta, at #whoi_avast. This testing allows us to view the behavior of the #nanometrics sensor when released as it would be on the seafloor. Engineers were able to collect valuable information and make modifications prior to building the rest of the fleet.

We are fortunate to have access to these types of facilities at @whoi.ocean.
