Since 2018, OBSIC has enthusiastically supported the training and mentoring of local high school students with an interest in technology through the Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School’s (UCT) cooperative education program. Under this supervised on-the-job training, juniors and seniors spend a minimum of 30 hours every other week working outside of the classroom. OBSIC has been fortunate to have multiple students from UCT and our current student is junior, Max Buckley. Max hit the ground running in January 2025 and has been a great asset to the lab already! He assisted in the assembly of 73 instruments for two cruises, tested various OBS components in the lab and even participated in a short cruise aboard R/V Tioga to recover a few OBSs off the Weepeckets Islands. We value this mutually beneficial relationship and hope it continues for years to come!

#obsic recently spent 30 days aboard the @rvsallyride recovering 49 OBSs off the Galápagos Islands as part of the Marine IGUANA experiment (Lead PI @emiliehooft U Oregon). The instruments were deployed in April 2023.
This NSF funded project focuses on seismically imaging the mantle plume that has created the Galápagos Islands. More specifically the project intends to determine the thickness of the plume, the lateral distribution of the plume, and verify the presence of small-scale convection.
